In Memoriam

I think we've forgotten something.

Andrew Cunanan's final months are a fascinating story to examine, but as we revel in the bizarre circumstances which occurred (and continue to do so), we lose sight of the fact that there are real people still living with the aftereffects of the infamous enigma Andrew Cunanan. These individuals don't take this saga so lightly, and they suffer deep personal wounds which they must deal with with every day. These people are the families and friends of those five men who died apparently at the hands of Andrew Phillip Cunanan.

The following is a brief letter I received from one of these survivors...

Jeff Trail sailing off the coast of San Diego 1995 (w/ Andrew)The death of Andrew Cunanan put an end to the worst spring of my life. I was close to the first victim, Jeff Trail, and had at one point been in a relationship with him. I was probably the last of Jeff's California friends to see him alive. I had spent the first week of April in Minneapolis with him, of course unaware that that would be the last time I would ever see him.

After this whole mess was over with, I realized how much of "media whores" we all are. I, too, became almost obsessed with the whole media frenzy that took place during the hunt for Cunanan. Of course I had to try to forget that I was in some way attached to the whole story, or else I never would have been able to turn on the television, because of Jeff's photo being broadcast every time there was some new story.

I think the reason I was most upset about running into your page, is that I just hate to see it all made fun of. I admit some parts were rather humorous, and creative. I just really haven't reached that point yet. That point of not being able to get upset and sad when I come across something related to the story. I still do get very upset. I miss the hell out of Jeff, as does anyone else who knew him.

If you have not read the article written by Muareen Orth in the September issue of Vanity Fair, you should. She covered everything more thoroughly than any other reporter ever dreamed of. And in this months [September's] issue is my response to her story.
